Special advanced seminars NAFA-Plus for novice drivers in alcohol or drug-related

Have you had a traffic offense involving alcohol or drugs during your probationary period? Then the driving license authority will order you to attend a special advanced training seminar (NAFA-Plus).

According to the Road Traffic Act (StVG § 2b), participation in a special advanced training seminar (according to § 36 FeV - Driving License Ordinance) is mandatory in order to keep or regain your driver's license.

The NAFA-Plus seminar consists of a preliminary discussion and three group sessions, each lasting 3 hours. If you have fully attended the advanced seminar, you will receive a certificate of attendance.

The seminar is conducted by specially trained traffic psychologists. The following topics are covered

  • What was the actual cause of my traffic offense?
  • Why do I consume alcohol or drugs?
  • How can I avoid getting into a similar situation again in the future and committing a traffic offense?
  • How can I separate alcohol consumption and driving?
  • What are the dangers of alcohol consumption and drug use?
  • Is my alcohol consumption actually "normal"?
  • Would I be better off not drinking alcohol?
  • How can I manage to abstain from drugs?
  • How can I behave if others try to persuade me to drink or take drugs?

You will receive your certificate of attendance - usually directly at the end of the last course session. You do not have to take a final exam during the course. What is important is your complete and active participation in the course.

With NAFA-Plus, we help you to get your driver's license back or keep it. And not just for a few weeks or months - but for the long term!

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I am unable to fully participate in a course?

You must attend a course in full in order to be issued with a certificate of attendance.

Do I have to take alcohol or drug tests during the course?

As a rule, no alcohol or drug tests are required during the course; however, if you are found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a test may be carried out.

What happens after attending the course?

Once you have completed the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance, which you can present to the driving license authority. If you have a traffic offense during the probationary period, your probationary period will be extended to a total of 4 years.

What else is important to know?

If the driving license authority orders a special advanced training seminar, it usually sets a deadline by which you must submit the certificate of attendance. If you are still in possession of your driver's license and do not submit a certificate of attendance by the deadline, your driver's license will be revoked. If you no longer have a driving license, you will not be issued a new driving license without submitting a certificate of participation.

Depending on the reason why your driving license was revoked, the driving license authority may order a medical-psychological examination (MPU) in addition to the special advanced training seminar and the granting or retention of your driving license may depend on an MPU. For example, you must expect an MPU if you have driven with an alcohol level of 1.6 ‰ or more.

Do I also have to undergo a medical-psychological examination (MPU) or a medical report?

Depending on why your driving license was revoked, the driving license authority may order a medical-psychological examination (MPU) in addition to the special advanced training seminar and the granting or retention of your driving license may depend on an MPU. For example, you must expect an MPU if you drive with an alcohol level of 1.6 ‰ or more.

Your driving license authority can tell you whether you have to take an expert opinion.
